Science of Reading and Spelling
Education Associates Ireland provides clear, evidence-informed guidance on the science of reading and spelling.
Our Mission and Focus
We aim to increase practitioners understanding of academic research and how this may impact classroom practice so that classroom teachers can make professional decisions based on all of the research evidence available. The science of reading and spelling continues to evolve as new peer-reviewed findings emerge. It is important to keep abreast of new research which sheds light on why some children experience difficulty acquiring literacy skills. We explain the statistics used to support research findings so that teachers understand the strength of the findings reported.
What Is the Science of Reading and Spelling
The science of reading and spelling draws on cognitive psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and education research. It examines how children acquire a sight vocabulary, learn to decode, spell, build fluency, and develop comprehension. We present this evidence in accessible language. Our guidance supports informed professional decision-making rather than trend-led or commercially driven practice.
